More trouble. The relay did not fix the problem. However, I am onto a new solution. I took the ECM out again, but before I did, I noticed I could take it "off-line" by moving it or shaking the wires going in. There is clearly a connection problem.
I could also take it off-line by tapping it lightly, or even tapping the outer box. So, I held the ECM in place and tried to shake the wires individually to find the "problem child". I could not find any one wire that seemed loose. I then assumed the loose connection was in the ECM or on the board. With nothing left to lose, I decided to open the ECM.
Upon opening it, I found the car I bought from Audi as Certified Pre-owened a few years ago, had a GIAC chip in it. Outraged as I was, I wanted to make this work, as I did not want to go back 30 horses. I took the chip out, reseated it and plugged the ECM back in. I now can tap the ECM rather sternly, before it stalls/goes off-line. I drove the car around the 'hood last night and into work today. There were no problems. However, there were no problems yesterday morning or any morning previous. The issue has been on the way home. I guess we will see what happens tonight. I know that I fixed at least one problem.

Final post. The car left me stranded. Audi Roadside picked me up and Audi service replaced the computer. I talked them "down" to $1700. These cars are great when they run...
