Australian 2000 A3 1.8T (AGU engine, 8/99 build)

When I press the left stalk on the instrument cluster the panel says "7800 kms to service" even though the car was last serviced 69 days ago and has only gone 1500kms in that time. Immediately after the service the indicator said "15,000 kms to service".

Instrument cluster blocks all appear normal -
#39 = 69 (days from last service, correct)
#40 = 15 (kms x 1000 since last service, correct)
Blocks 41-44 correspond to 15 [x1000] kms between services and 365 day service interval
Block 45 is set to 1 - not long life oil (even though I use synthetic)

Can anyone tell me why the service countdown indicator is counting down too fast?
