The OP was using VCDS 12.12, from Sept 2013. The UDS CAN Gateway was new with the D4 A8 release in 2010. Probably a software bug that simply needed to get patched.
That's very odd. So that's what it shows for the serial afterward, just the one character?

Here we see VCDS doing the serial number adaptation in a UDS J533. But in a C7 A6/A7 rather than a D4 A8.
I wonder if the issue is on the D4.0 A8 J533 side, or on the VCDS side. Did you ever log this issue at Ross-Tech, or post it to the forums there? https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/30413/
Again, a C7, but we see it using the same files, just a different part hardware and software rev (213).

i didn't check again but, serial number will be 310325P02J to 210325P02J, first character changes.
The proper thing to do is enter the new battery actual serial number but the car does not really care. What is important when replacing battery is to change at least one character in the serial number programming to tell the intelligent charging system that the car has a new battery and will charge it as such. If you replace the battery and do not change the serial then the car does not know and continues to charge the battery as an old battery which will not maximize the life of the new battery. This will also allow you to install any brand battery.
