Default Can an ECU bench test good and still throw 18020 / P1612 codes afterward?

Sent in my ECU for R&R to ECU Direct -- who actually just send it to Micro-Tech Auto (GRRR! Wish I'd known so I could eliminate the middleman!).

When in the car, the ECU threw an intermittent 18020 / P1612 code according to VAG-COM. Micro-Tech is going to bench test before repairing.

What are the chances it would bench good and still be bad?

What are the chances it would bench good, BE good and still somehow throw intermittent 18020 / P1612 codes?

Is there any sort of self-healing in the ECU? In other words, could something tweak the ECU, make it throw the intermittent code and then the ECU heals itself?
