Default EPB brake piston release issue

I have an 2005.5 A4 Avant. We are attempting to change the rear brake pads and it seems that the pistons need to be released before we can remove the brakes. We bought an Autel MaxiEST201 (EPB service tool) to open the brakes and we are getting the "opening brakes" message then it says "Link error." Does anyone happen to know how we can fix this or just be able to open the pistons? Hoping not to have to buy more equipment.

What does the Autel have to say?
