Could it also be a bad/non existent breather hose ? The reason I ask is that because that while replacing the valve cover gaskets recently I found out just how fragile the valve cover breather hose gets after 70k miles and I have yet to replace it. Now I get the same fault code. Or is there something else I need to look into ?

Re: very likely the EVAP purge valve.
Where would I look to find this vavle as it is what my Lithia Audi, Reno, said may be the latest check engine lite problem on my 02 A6 4.2. Thing is I refused to pay $158.00 up front to order the valve. If it is sticking and showing as a fault, can it be cleaned some how like in the old days???Jim Tennier

If the valve is the culprit...
it's probably a problem with the solenoid itself and can't be repaired. However, there are plenty of sources where you can buy these valves for around the $100 range, maybe a bit more.
