Default Gas Gauge showing Midtank as Full

Got this used 2003 A4 2 weeks ago. Filled it once the first week, no problem. Tank was full, and showed full on the panel. Filled it last night and the tank is full, but the panel line meter only shows 1/2 way. This has thrown off the other readings that actually are digital (mpg, and miles left in tank etc).

The only thing I did differently was leave the car power on (key turned) while i filled as I was listening to a radio program. Typically I turn the car completely off. I doubt that would cause a problem.

When i turn off the car the gauge drops to empty like normal, so it doesn't seem stuck except for if it was only stuck moving past the 1/2 mark, but it was fine last week.

My question is, what the heck? Do you think it is the gauge itself? The car is confused and thinks 1/2 is now full (how did that happen), or the bobber in the gas tank is stuck and 1/2?

If you turn it off, the gauge has no power, so it even drops if it's stuck.

Default Re: Well then?

Understood.. so it can be
a) stuck from going over the 1/2 tank mark.
b) The bobber stuck in the tank.
c) some electrical mishap and/or car just thinks 100% is 50%.

Anything else? Suggestions?

Default sender eh?

Is that the level in the gas tank? Or something else?

Estimate on fix/replace? Do I need an audi shop for that or can any place do it?

Does the computer need to be reset for it to work?

Default First off take it out and see if it's stuck that doesn't cost you much except time.

Make sure the tank is as empty as possible before you start doing that, detailed instructions can be found in the bentley manuals as usual. When you have the sensor(s) out you might want to check and possibly clean the moving parts to prevent future jamming.
