I went to program the RNS-E with my trusty old VAG-COM and received error "controller uses unknown protocol! Protocol Keyword:EF8F" Being that I was using Beta .78 version of the VAG, I thought it was a good idea to download the latest version. But this did not help either. It attempts to connect to the controller a couple of times (15 seconds or so) and gives error "Too many errors to continue!" I am using the old iso-com interface, and I am wondering if that is the issue. I also found it a bit annoying that the new version of the VAG-COM did not detect my old one and the fact that it was activated, and wants me to activate it. I guess I am going to have to shoot Ross-Tech and email to get it activated.

...and the current Versions of VAG-COM work fine with RNS-E's.
The latest Version for an ISO-COM is the 311.2 (end of 2003) and since the RNS-E was introduced somewhere ?2004? there is no guarantee that it will work.
The software re-activation methods have changed and therefor it was indispensable to let you request a new activation code for that version.
But if the shareware version does not work, the activated one can't work either.
So the suggested solution for that problem is an upgrade to current interface hardware, this will cost you $79 and you will no longer fight with any activation problems.

http://www.ross-tech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=RetOldC OM</a

Beta 0.78 software from 2001 hasn't a prayer of working on the RNS_E, and 311.2 might be questionable as well.
VW/Audi keeps changing things. We manage to keep up pretty well, but we're not clairvoyant.
