Just upgraded to a new Dell 410N laptop running Windows XP Professional. Also, the computer is running Novel networking software which cannot be removed. When I start up the computer, I log onto local work station only, and don't activate any networking feature. I need to change my registered VAG-COM to the new computer. Running VAG-COM software version 409.1-S with a Twin-Com cable having a serial connection. I have the Windows XP Firewall turned off. I've searched this board, and looked through the FAQ on the Ross-Tech site. I give up.
When I test Com Port 3, I get the message:
Port Status - OK
Interface: Found!
Type: Serial Pass-Through
Opto/Iso: No
Ross-Tech Design: No
After this, I hit the save button. However, no serial number for the software becomes visible. Also, when I exit the Vag-Com program and start it up, it indicates that it has never been tested/saved.
When I try to check any controller on the car, it cannot connect. Suggestions please. Thanks in advance.

Dell laptops almost always have the serial port on COM1. COM3 is most likely a Modem. Please check in Device Manager.
What does VAG-COM say when you sent the port to COM1 and click TEST?

When I test the Com 1 port with the VAG-COM cable connected, and car turned on, I get the message:
Port Status: OK
Interface: Not Found!
(The green LED is lit on the cable interface.)
That is why I have been messing with Com 3 which was of no use. Now, it seems like I need to do some tuning on Com 1. Any thoughts?

Go to device manager and set port settings for your com to 4800 baud, also hit advanced settings and lower the connection speeds. Then save and try it again. I had trouble with mine too.

You can install it in a different folder. We've had a couple of reports that the TWIN-COM doesn't work with 409 on a few PC's. You might have a PC like that. Anyway, I'd like to know if 311.2 behaves the same or differently.

Unfortunately, we've never had a PC here that behaves this way (i.e. works with 311.2 but not 409) so we've not been able to get a handle on the problem.
Yes, you can register 311.2.
