No ODB communication
2009 Audi S8 no odbII communication
back story
picked up car at auction as a personal challenge
steering wheel locked
Key locked in ignition
Lights will come on for mileage and clock on dash - nothing else
No MMI function
Passenger seat moves
Drivers seat and windows do not function
Power to ODBII port, but no communication
magic trick (Brake, hazard, headlights, high beam) to wake up ODBII does not work.
in my line of troubleshooting I am thinking either chewed wiring or bad ECU to test first

The OBD CAN lines go back directly to the J533. Either it's unpowered or broken or asleep. With who knows what broken on the car, if it's not getting wake signal from anything on the CAN buses, I wonder if pulling and putting back the fuse for it would wake it. But probably need to drop the glove box and confirm 12v on the term 30 (battery) to term 31 (ground) pins on the J533, as well as the OBD-II port. That's pin 1 to pin 11 on the J533 20-pin plug, and pin 16 to pin 4 and pin 5 (both 4 and 5 are ground) on the OBD 16-pin plug. Both devices' term 30 comes from fuses in column brown on the passenger end of the dash: fuse 5 for the J533 and fuse 11 for the OBD. Note, the fuses on the passenger end are counted bottom to top, not top to bottom.

Was looking through wiring diagrams on the J533 but that helps immensely. Glove box is already dropped and I think I verified all circuits for voltage but will double check as I am just getting back to this car. All fuses have been checked and replaced on both cabin sides and trunk and relay carrier. Relays have been tested for function but not replaced. I did not know that about the passenger side fuses. I will re-inspect.
I also replaced the gateway module J533 to see if that was it with no change.
Kessy module looks clean with no water intrusion at all in it or the floorboard area.

That's why I start small. The scan tool talks to the J533. The whole situation involves term 30 and term 31 to the OBD-II port and to the J533, and the two CAN lines between the devices. If that's not working, that's the whole little world I have to look into; everything else is irrelevant until the scan tool is talking to the J533. If you tried a second J533, then I have to assume it's something with voltage at the plugs or the CAN lines between the plugs. Diagnose Dan did a video where we woke the J533 by jumpering term 30 to the term 15 connection (find the J533 term 15 fuse; the black columns on the dash ends are term 15; pull the fuse and confirm which side of the fuse socket goes to the J533, fuse tap one of the term 30 fuses over to that connection to pass 12v to the J533 term 15 pin). OBD-II port also has a term 15 connection (pin 1) and fuse in passenger end black column, but shouldn't be relevant for the scan tool to work.

Progress, Huge thanks @SMac770 I was able to jump power and get access to the ODBII system watching Diagnosis DAN and your notes + a wiring diagram. Lots of unable to communicate to different systems and the Auth start stop looks to be triggered with a component protection active code. Based upon how many modules can't communicate and Dan's video I am guessing the Central control module. Can I VIN swap a used CCM and then reset the component protection in VCDS?

The J393 is the immobilizer master (ie, key recognition and vehicle access/start authority). So swapping it is never a simple task, unless you happen to have ODIS and the necessary privilege to run the immobilizer adaptation (so same concept as component protection, just more scrutinized). VCDS cannot address component protection or the immobilizer. You'll need a dealership or shop or someone with that specifically identified ability (immobilizer V adaptation).
Which module is that CP active message from? CP active will always be an "annoyance issue", never a core functionality off issue. So comms errors will never be a result of CP.
Cannot communicate would not be specific to the J393 being toast. But, to see if more modules would "wake", you'd want to go to the term 15 relay (under the dash, behind the headlamp switch) and bypass the relay to jumper the term 30 supply to the term 15 output. This is normally controlled by the J393, but if the J393 is out to lunch, we can still do it manually and see what all comes on.
But yet, J393 being non-responsive on the CAN, lot of modules will be displeased, even if they are now awake. Unless I'm misunderstanding something. This best to just always post the complete autoscan log unabridged so there's no confusion on what's being presented.

Oh, I misread that at the start. Was thinking 2009 S5, not 2009 S8. That's quite a different beast, the D3.5 era. That probably has a separate J518 module (05 access/start authorization). My bad.
Audi makes decent high level documentation on new generation releases (the "SSP" documents), but nothing for mid cycle updates. But it would be worth googling for "Audi SSP 287" and checking out the layout on pages 4/5.
I don't see any distance regulation or adaptive cruise type control module listed, so the J533 likely has just the four main CAN buses and the MOST ring. A lot of the cannot reach are on the MOST ring. Understand the MOST ring, in that each device on the ring must be powered and working (to an extent). The light is "in the open", but sent "to the next device". It's up to that device to read that light, do whatever it does, and send the light on to the next device. Any unpowered or dead device on the ring, and the whole thing goes down.
But there's plenty others there too. 03-abs. That's on the drive system CAN, no relation to the J393 (46-central convenience). It could be the J104 is unpowered, etc.
But yeah, you'll want to break down the list by communication bus and then work from those groupings. For example, don't bother with 37-navigation (on the MOST ring) until you're ready to tackle everything on the MOST ring together.
