Total idiot needs help

OK, I'm a total n00b at this. I did search the archives and visited the Ross site, but I'm overwhelmed by all the info.
Here's my situation: my chipped '99 A4 1.8T is giving me a CEL. Found a guy nearby with a VAG (the VAG locator is great!) but he's not too familiar with it, only used it once. I don't have a Bentley manual for my A4, and don't know where to start to diagnose this problem. OK, I did figure out where to plug the VAG in, but that's about it.
Can someone give me a link to a basic procedure to get me started?
