A friend of mine says the vag com cord is $500 Cdn and you download the vag com info for free to your laptop. For $10, one can purchase a vag com compatible cord. Anyone have experience with this?

...as soon as you use VAG-COM with that interface ("cord") the software becomes activated (dongle like) and fully functional. All genuine Ross-Tech interfaces work with current and future versions of VAG-COM, while all 3rd party interfaces only work with older versions of the software (Release 311/409 from end 2003 or mid 2004). 3rd party interface hardware does not work with all models, while the genuine Ross-Tech ones do work even with the latest 2007 models.
So one general question, on which cars/models do you wanna use it?

I bought an eBay cable... When you finally get it calibrated it works really well... with the older, but still very resourceful, version of VAG-Com. Go for it... wouldn't waste your money until you know you'll use it a lot, right?

I got mine there and it didn't work. Don't know if this was an issue with the piece itself or if my computer was the reason. I'm going to get the VAG when I have some extra dough.

I purchased the real thing. Why fool with knock offs when you get a quality product with great support from ross-tech. most serious mechanics will not fool with fakes when doing serious work.

wlechner - you are exactly right. most people aren't mechanics though. Would you pay $500 just to pull some codes? maybe that's all some people do with VAG COM, it's like a heads up.

g-com software and not have to buy another copy? That's what bothered me the most. It's not like other software where once you have the license it works and can be reinstalled after a fresh format or computer upgrade. If buying a cord from your site also me to not have to buy new software every time the above occurs I would like to buy one.
