Vag-com doesn't recognise the car-any help?

Vag-com doesn't recognise the car-any help?
Finally gave up on the stealers and shops and said I can probably doa better job-Bought the uni-com system to work with my Dell laptop. Before registering went out to the car and plugged in the adapter. Turned the Key to the "on" pos. Went into the Vag-com program, went into Options, clicked on com port 3 - test. Connection OK-modem 5. Did the light test. Ok. Next step is to open the modules-clicked on the "Engine" module-Hourglass for 15 sec. Error comes up saying no connection can be made-check the following: 1) Correct Com port, Ingnition turned on., and two others. Any one else have this problem? TIA

COM3 on a Dell? Not!
The serial port is on COM1. COM3 is likely your modem. Needless to say, VAG-COM can't talk to your car through your modem.

Ok, COM 1 gets me to "communicate". Tried to open every module for my '97 A8 and could not open modules 09,16,22,25,36,55,56. Based on your instruction page it says NOT to register the software until you are able to open all the modules. What next? TIA

It seems to me that the modules in your "Can't Communicate" list
likely are not present in your car.
09 - doesn't exist in any D2 chassis A8
16 - probbaly only in newer ones that '97
22 - your quattro is pure mechanical.
25 - your car has no immobilizer
36 - only if seats have memory, and maybe only newer ones
55 - only if your car has Xenons
