What do you think is the degree of real world snow/ice performance between the 2? I like the idea of just buying tires as opposed to a package, but I don't want to have to sweat it when the snow flies. TIA

I'd go that route.
Advantages? No need to go to a tire shop twice a year and pay to have the tires dismounted and remounted (and also it can be a PITA). Instead, you'll be able to swap them in your garage. This is especially nice if you wake up to a surprise snow storm.
Also, winter can be pretty hard on wheels. The salt and sand on the road is pelting against the wheels all winter.. they really take a beating. (pitted finish). Getting a cheap set of alloys for winter will give you some peace of mind that your summer wheels are safely stored in your garage. Also, you will be able to go with a narrower width tire on the 17", which will be better in deep snow.
just my 2 cents.
