Default Re: Experience vs facts

A 245/40x17 is not a good choice as it can foul the inner suspension arm, especially the rear unless a wider offset wheel is used.
A 235/40 is only 1.3% smaller than the stock 205/60x15 that came with the car.
23 months later the ABS is still working fine.
225/45x17 were as rare as hens teeth 2 years ago, and the dealer and tyre shop recommended choice was 235/40x17...but of course they are wrong too.
Guess we just do things different down here.
I'll agree to disagree with you, but just remember I have been running around for 23 months and almost 37000kms on those tyres before you go stating 'facts' at me about ABS not working etc.
Graham
(not hiding behind an anonymous handle)

It seems like the different rolling radii would affect the speedo/odom more than ABS system.

is it only abs you have to worry about?
are we saying the difference is too small to affect other engine management functions?
also i find the smaller overall diameters look goofy.
1996 a4 2.8

Default Re: 19" will require Modifications to A4

If you lower your A4 and have 19" rims on your car then you'll need to have the fenders mondified to prevent extreme rubbing. You'll also notice that the touring cars which run 19" and 20"s have some camber and are extremely "tucked" under the wheel well.
I have 18" Hamann Mono IIs on my A4 and it rides/handles/looks great.

First, go ahead and read the banter between Graham and "Flyboy," Graham's explanations (as always) are clear, concise, and shed plenty of light on the situation. Kudos. In particular, what Graham was talking about that was of interest of me was about rubbing the inner suspension arms with a wider tire (the 245/40/17) - I had a running dialogue with another A4 owner from Las Vegas when I got my rims (Brabus Monoblock V, 18x8.5, ET38, S-02 225/40/18), this owner ran MSW 55C 18x8.5 ET37. .. he told me that when he switched from 225/40/18 MXX3 Pilots to SP8000's of the same size, he encountered rubbing on the inner suspension components. Point the blame on the fact that the Michelin is a "skinnier" 225 then the Dunlop was. (He also has H&R coilovers) Apparently, the S-02's are a fairly "skinny" tire as well, so they cleared fine in my setup (i have the H&R coilovers). So while the offset sounds fine, my main issue would be to ensure that the tire is a fairly "skinny" 235, as you're already pushing it IMO in terms of widths on the A4. A 225 is already quite wide on an A4, as i have just barely over a thumb's worth of clearance between my suspension/brake components and my tires.
Of course, you'll also want to get the rolling diameter as close to normal as possible. . . if anything, go lower instead of bigger diameter. . .those suspension parts come AWFUL CLOSE to the wheels. Simple equation for you:
Wheels + Suspension ==> Impact ==> Bad Thing
Good luck, and post some pics of that bad boy when you're done! =)
Edmund Louie
98 A4Q 30V
