Default 2001 A6 2.7 T stock tire replacements?

I have a non sport A6 2.7 T 2001 with 16" 215/55. I live in South TX. What is the best replacement tires (same wheels) to improve performance with minimal noise. Can I use a wider tire on the same wheels.

Thanks.

Since you are replacing tires why not take this time to upgrade your wheels as well, you could find some 17's package at tirerack for under $1000. 17's makes the best compromise in performance and ride if lacking in the looks category. tires in the 17 range is very competetive and the price for premium tire are sometimes lower than that of 16's. and some top tire companies don't even make tires for 16's. I would go with Bridgestone S-03 for max performance with quiet ride and Yokahoma db for the least noise. But I am riding on 18 Kumbo's and the are quiet and soft of small bumps but a little harsh on harder bumps while noise is better than stocks (continentals). Typically, summer tires will give you a softer compound thus quieter and softer but wears out faster. unless you have snow around your area just stick with summer tires.
