245/40R17 on 2001 A6 2.7T will this fit?

I am just getting into doing "Driver Education" events and am looking for some help with wheels and tires. I have narrowed things down to two tire size choices: 235/45R17 and 245/40R17. I would rather have the 245/40 for performance reasons but I have been reading that there may be some fitment issues on my A6. Has anyone successfully run this size on a lowered A6 2.7T?

Year is 2001. I would prefer not to get into spacers but the car really needs some help with holding the front end to the track. Can I get a 245 to fit with the standard 35mm offset?
Also, I see the Dunlop Star Spec Z1 will be in stock next week. What do you think of them? Someone said they tend to run wide? Thanks.

When Audi sold the 17" sport package on the 4.2 and S6, they provided 255/40-17, whcih is STILL a little undersized - both in actual circumference and in load rating ( those rims bend ).
I would consider 245/45-17, or 235/45-17 (Audi's other OEm choice). At worst, 255/40-17 - a widely available size by the way.

I have the 2.7T. The 4.2 version has nicely flared fenders with room to expand. My only option seems to be 235 for fit and sticky tires for performance.
I ordered one 245/45 from Tire Rack to see if it would fit but when it arrived it was MUCH taller than my current 225/45 tires so I returned it. Since I want this for the track, I do not want a tire taller than what I have now (rollover in corners). The 235/45 is a safe choice but before I plunk down some cash, I wanted to make sure the 245/40 will have fitment issues. 245/40 would be my preference if it would fit because side wall height is slightly less than the 225/45 so it would perform better.

I run the same height as 245/45 regularly on my S6.
225/55-16 and 245-50-16
Same deal. Works nicely.
i understand your trade -offs, though. But dont bend a wheel achievoing turn-in bliss.

245/40R17 should fit this application with no rubbing. As far as an extreme performance street tire goes, the Z1 Star Spec should be outstanding. A little on the loud side, but great turn-in response and grip levels. We aren't sure how they run (as in running wider) compared to others in this size, sorry.

Tires

On the recommendation of Gary@TireRack I got the 245/40R17 wheels and tires. The back tires make contact on big bumps. Fortunately I have coil overs with very stiff springs. I raised things up in back and expect everything to be fine at the track where there are no big bumps. I will run my 225/45 tires when I return from the track.
I would expect the 235/45 size to work just fine.
