I have 235/45 summer tires. Matching 16" size would be 215/55.
Would the difference between 215 and 205 width winter tires make a big difference in upstate NY snow?
If 205 is recommended, would /55 or /60 be better (I think /55 puts more miles on odometer than car goes)
Looking for any suggestions!

The 205/60-16 is the smallest 16" size that will work. You would not be able to go with a narrower tire and these would be aprox. 3/10" taller than the tires you have now. The 215/55-16 is a much better size due to stability issues on dry pavement. I would only go with the 205/60-16 size if you live in a very serious snow area. The tradeoff in dry stability would be pretty big for most folks' taste.
