Other than the obvious of get different wheels/tires, what can be done to prevent bent rims with low profile tires? Does overinflating help any, or make it more likely that the tire will survive the pothole, but the rim will bend?
This is in regards to a 235/40-18 setup.
TIA

If you KNOW you can't avoid the pothole, make sure to take your foot OFF the brake as you're hitting it. A rotating wheel will resist damage much more than a stationary one (which your wheel will be if the pothold is big enough).

but then it might affect other handling characteristics of the vehicle. It may also depend on the load rating for the tire and how much load you might carry.
I guess you need to find a happy medium.
FWIW I run ~38 PSI all around on same setup (18x8, 235/40/18) on a B6 A4 Avant.

One of those teeth rattlers that you know either will bend the rim or bubble the sidewall.
