Can a single damaged tire be replaced or do all 4 have to be the same?

Enquiring for a friend with an A4 Quattro
The tires have about 15000 miles on them. One tire has a 10cm scratch/tear that supposedly needs to be replaced.
Can only that one tire be changed? Dpes the tire have to be exactly the same? same tire wear?
thanks

1) Is the tear near the sidewall, or on it? This is the most vulnerable part of the tire. If it is, don't repair it, it's garbage. You don't want to compromise the integrity of that tire. Imagine speeding on the highway and having a blow-out, not a good scenario. If it's in the tread, further away for the sidewall, it can be repaired. The best way to repair any problems are from the inside with a plug and patch, or just patch, depending on what's needed.
2) If you need to replace the tire you could get just one (try to get the same tire, or at the very least it HAS to be the same size). With 15,000 miles on the tires it could be near the wear-bars or fine? Get the tread depth measured. If the tires have plenty of tread left then just get one, if they are all pretty much worn down, then this is a good excuse to get new tires, since you "have" to replace one anyway. Most tires start out with 10/32 depth, 2/32 will be worn down to the bars.
Good luck.

Agree 100%- typically if the tires are within the first 3/32nds of wear (mostly 5-8k) you can likely get away with one.
