Does anyone know if a 5x100mm bolt pattern will fit my 98.5 A4 2.8qs. If not, why?

nope...cuz it's the wrong bolt pattern. ours are 5x112.

OK. Now for a dumb question.....What's the difference?

i can't remember exactly, but i think that the 112mm is the distance from center of the wheel to the center of the lug hole.

Nope, it's the measurement from one bolt-hole center to another.

Here's how a 5-bolt pattern is measured...
