I have been wondering what the differences are between the M2 and the M3. I can see that the tread pattern is different but has the compound also changed or is it the same rubber? I see from the TireRack web site (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/winter.jsp) that the M3 is rated slightly better across the board but there is also a big difference in the Total Miles Reported.
I currently own a set of M2s on 16 inch rims and want to know if I should "upgrade" when its time for new winter tires.

I went this path this year - upgrading 205/55/16 M2 to the M3. My very own subjective opinion: M3 much better on dry roads, M2 much better in winter conditions, including light snow, deep snow, and ice. M3 is maybe a little better for hydroplaning resistance. I haven't run the M3 on warm roads, only cold weather so far (M2 was a greasy slippery handful when temps got to 80 degrees...)
I wouldn't want the M3 on a non-quattro car, and wish I'd bought another set of M2 instead. YMMV.
