I think that Audi recommends adding 5 psi to normal inflation pressures for snow tires with our S4. . . . Is this a good idea with snow tires in general? (i.e. snow tires on other vehicles?)

I always suggest to set to mfrs spec for the specific vehicle you are equipping, as it is optimized for best results. In other words, for your Audi, sure., For your BMW or Subaru, etc, that may give you less than ideal results.
