Default figuring out the right offset for new wheels

Hi,

I used to have a couple of audis, and have just gotten a new jetta.
I really want to put 235/4517 tires on it,
but i am afraid of rubbing.
OEM wheels are 17X7 ET54
could i find a 17X7 et48 or something similar and stick 235/45/17 on it?
Any other ideas?
A guy did put the OEM audi wheels 235/45/17 on oem audi 17X7.5 ET45 and he is rubbing in front.
Gary? Anyone ?

thanks all

Thanks,

Default rubbing aside, dontcha think 235s are a bit too much tire for a 7" rim??

a 215/225 would 'seat' better, probably still have the same effective patch width, and have bettar steering response/feel

Default sounds like i might get 17X7.5 and put in 225's on them

because i want to do 2 things:
1. make the wheel well more filled
2. get the extra performance

Note: the 17X7.5 move the wheel slightly outwards, and so it makes it look better. On the jetta it really looks like a 14 inch wheel, when you put stock 17X7 with standard offset

What i wont be getting with the 225's is the error in the speedo, which i would have liked to have. Jetta is even worse than audi in terms of the "overly optimistic speed readings". At 120-140Km/h you it shows 7+km/h more than you are actually doing, and at that much over posted speed limit the last thing i want to do is math in my head.
