Is a front end alignment important when replacing tires?

I was told that uneven tire wear could result if the alignment was bad. I believe that, but wonder if, at 36K miles, I need to be doing it. I think I have been pretty easy on the car since day 1.

my brand new Blizzak WS-15s(not really brand new), didn't last even 8,000 miles without exposing the steel belt. 8,000 miles...on new tires. That is BAD.
in the end, it's cheaper to get an alignment.

The service guy said that, if the car tracks straight and doesn't pull to one side or another, it should be O.K.
I haven't noticed any tracking problems, but I'll give it a thorough test. Not spending the $380 would be stupid if I have to spend hundreds on new tires in less than a year.
