Default Gary: 205/60/16 vs 215/55/16 snow tires

Hi Gary,

I'm replacing the Blizzak WS50's on my 06 A4. After 4 seasons of service, they have worn below the snow bars, so it's time. My question comes in the sizing. The originals are 215/55/16, but I have noticed that this size is relatively expensive compared to 205/60/16, the diameter is near enough to make no difference and most of the same tires are available. Is there a driving reason to stay with the original sizing for tires that will be driven at 4/10's or below? Or will the narrower size be a mushy mistake that I'll regret for another four seasons?

I am looking at the Blizzak WS60 or the new Conti Extreme Winter Contact. My primary winter driving will be on mostly rainy, but occasionally snowy or icy roads with poor snow removal as snow seldom falls here. We also will be crossing the Cascade mountain passes visiting family, so a full-on snow tire is really a better choice, quattro or no.

So do you think the 205 is a good replacement for the 215?

Thanks,
Steve McDermott

Yes, you can use the 205/60R16 size with no problem. There is very little difference in diameter, and the slightly more narrow tire will do a bit better in loose snow as well. We do not yet have much experience with the Conti, but I have personally used the WS60 and would highly recommend it.
