Default Check your owner's manual, I think they mention chains somewhere...

... However, with 235 width on a B5, I think clearance of your uppers might be an issue?

Default check to see how much clearance you have between your upper mount and your tire.

I don't think it's enough to safely run chains or cables with 235 width tires. I'll take a look at my manual when I get home to find that part.. I'll post it here.

Default Here's what the manual says...

Looks like while it's possible, they say not to do it on stock wheel/tire sizes. I"m guessing you need to run a narrower tire to do chains... to keep them away from suspension components, etc.

Default Ah.. ok.. I finally read your original post ;)

you'll probably be fine with the pirellis. You could swap wheels/tires with a friend temporarily if you know of one locally that has a winter setup. That's probably what I'd do to be on the safe side.
