Gary - question about the Goodyear GS-D3s: are there two sidewall stiffness specs?

If so, what are the different names? I love my tires, but the turn-in response leaves a bit to be desired. Is a little dull for my taste (but they are comfortable/smooth).
TIA!

Is it 225/45R17? If so there are W and Y rated tires, but we've not found a difference in stiffness between the two.
What I think you're feeling is full tread squirm.
Brand new tires at full tread depth have much more squirm than nearly bald tires which feel very responsive. In our testing, we found the GSD3 comparable to most of the other max performance tires in stiffness.

... on the TT boards on to the tires, and all have been happy. My size is 225/40/YR18; others on the board are using 235s on 18"s. I feel that the turn-in response is a bit dull, but definitely liveable given the rest of the tires' performance. It is a great tire!
Thanks for the info - I appreciate your response.

I've seen posts about XL sidewalls being available for these tires in some sizes. I have XL Conti tires and I've read that these are stiffer than the non XLs. Any comments on this rather than the speed rating?

Just saw his size is 225/40R18, which I'm showing is normally an XL tire. Often XL tires can use other contruction methods that don't include stiffer sidewalls to give them the higher load capability.

Do you know for sure that is the case with these tires? I'm about to make a decision in the next couple of weeks and I like the sound of the Eagles. My main concern is sidewall squish dumbing down the turn response. Other tires I am considering are: Kumho MX (cheap), BFG KD/KDW (I hear good things about these), ContiSportContact2 (I on the last legs on a set of these right now and they were fine). Any comments? I'd love to get your input on these before I make a choice.

Here is my take :
Kumho MX and KDW2 would be stiffer, KD is VERY stiff. Comparing a full tread depth Contact 2 to an F1GSD3 should have the GY with a stiffer sidewall. Hard to go wrong with either the MX or GSD3.
I run the KDW2s on a 95 M3 and although they are not quiet riding tires, they are very responsive. The KD is fairly extreme, the loudest when-new street tire I've ever driven on but amazing dry handling.

Tires
