Gary at the rack,Tire that is--All season tires/Yoko S4 info
Hey Gary,
Have seen you recommend Yokohama Avid W4s a couple of times. Was wondering what you think of the Advan .S4's?
Comparing to the usual suspects-- Bridgestone Pole position, Goodyear F1 All Season, Michelin Pilot sport AS and Conti Extremes- Main issues I am trying to address are:
1) Sidewall stiffness and therefore steering response and lean-- A few reviews complain of Bidgestone pole positions being soft and some say Advan S4 is a little dead in quick turns. How would you rank the above 4-5 tires in this?
2)I know the conti's have the best snow performance but how much do you loose with the ADVAN S4's (or others you'd recommend).
3) Noise ---how would you rank them.
Advan s4's rank higher in steering response in survey but what is your experience given that some complain about them being not so crisp?
I hate tires that are squirmy (or loud)--- will sacrifice a little ride for crispness.
Thanks in ADVANs 4 the info.
-----------
Size: 235/45/17 or 235/40/18 (standard 17" or 18" Audi A4 sizes)
-----------
General disclaimer: I do understand that we are talking all season tires which will never perform like summer high, ultra, max performance or F1 dry, intermediate,or full wet, rally, Cart, Nascar,etc..... tires.

1. Of those tires I'd say that the Advan S4 has slightly crisper turn in and steering response.
2. The Conti is unusually good in snow for this catagory. Any other tire in this catagory will be a noticeable step down in snow traction, however the Conti is also slower in steering response.
3. The quieter two would be the RE960A/S and Advan S4.<ul><li><a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR8&url=/tires/index.jsp">tires</a></li></ul>

I had Conti Extremes on a Subaru. They're very good, but they have an annoying characteristic (see i
In cold weather, they stiffen up (for want of a better term), so when it's parked, it gets a flat spot on the bottom. Ride is a little lumpy until the tires heat up (doesn't take long). I'm told this is because of the material used in the belts (?)
