What the heck is the difference between a grand touring all season and an high performance all season. I'm guessing grand touring denotes something specific but for the life of me I can't figure out what.

Generally speaking Grand touring A/S tires will have a bit smoother and quieter ride compared to those in the high performance A/S catagory. Keep in mind that there are many exceptions. Its much better to compare specific tires than catagories as some tires could fall into either one.

If what I want is a quiet smooth-riding A/S tire for my A6 4.2 (2005) I likely want GT tires...
The Pirelli Pzero's on the thing now are HORRIBLE.. after about 10k miles they became very "choppy" and are extrememly loud. I had rotated them faithfully etc. so no issues there. they have just over 20k on them now and I can't wait to have my nice quiet A6 back when I replace them (likely with Conti's or Michelins)
