H rated snow tire question. Michelin Pilot Alpin vs. Nokian NRW vs. ???

NRW vs high performance winter tires...
I agree that NRW is no match for HK1/2/Q for really bad winter weather and also agree that they may not handle as well as ultra high performance AS.
However I do not understand what makes you think that NRW is inferior to tires in high performance winter category (M2s, LM22 and such) in either handling or snow/ice traction?

Not what you want to hear, but Great E-Bay deal on Dunlop (more)
I researched the heck out of different tires and I "ended" up buying H-rated Vredestein WinTraks. I found a deal here in Colorado for $185 all 4. I have been in 8-12" snow without trouble. I feel it is more important to have Quattro than to need the "best" snow tires.
If you are every day driving in unplowed snow and ice more than a foot, well then maybe it matters.
I think all the tires you are looking at great, heard some negatives about wet driving LM-22's.
Anyway sorry about the rant, but you get Brand new dunlop wintersport M2's form this dude for $240, h-rated and only $60 per tire.

htt p://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=601263883&r=0&t=0</a

Yeah, I know. I watched this, the last time he tried to sell them...
... I'm surprized no one took them. Thats a great deal. I was thinking about these tires too, but I want to stick with a local tire retailer.

Two reasons:
The NRW is Nokia's first real attempt at a silica compounding (virtually the same as the HK10), almost 10 years behind its competition. They just don't have the R&D capability of the big companies. The competition is on its second and third generation silica compounding, with very complex chemistry and design (fibre reinforced/multicell).
The design itself. The tread blocks are very small and tall; the siping is better than the old design, but doesn't compare to michelin's; the bead reinforcement is antique (poor insert); the belt package sucks (no spiral or banding at 0 deg!).
It is very much an old school design. Better than the last generation Nokian, worse than all of the competition.

I'll have to argue.
I'm running NRWs and compared to a friend (also has an A4), I can stop much better than he in the snow, and he's running Dunlop M2s.
I am absolutely thrilled with the performance of the NRW. Decent in the dry, great in the wet, and great in the snow.. Mind you, not as good as a Q tire, but right up there with and maybe even ahead of other H rated winter tires.
