I'm looking to get some new rims, and am having a hard time deciding between 17s and 18s. I live in the NW metro Detroit area, so potholes abound. I love the look of 18s, but are they just too risky? What if I go with a taller profile tire?
Also, what is the widest tire/profile I can fit on a 17x8 and a 18x8?
Here are the sizes available (Kumhos)
225/45r17
235/40r17
235/45r17
245/40r17

255/45r17
225/40r18

255/35r18
Thanks,

If you are willing to repair them often, then you can go with 18"s. They will cost a lot every year to keep them true. This will be true even if you don't use the big rims in winter. The roads are just too awful for those rims, even in summer.
Keep another set of tires (and probably rims) also for winter. Kumhos won't do it, no summer tire will.
