Was wondering what tire size everyone is using for their winter set (16" or 17")
I live close to the border with Ontario Canada and right off the lake. We get some real nasty snow fall up here compared to my home town NYC (lake effect they call it) from late Novevember till late April.
What's the trade off besides pricing in the 16" or 17" inch sizes. I'll be going with a set of Dunlop M3's on dedicated rims.
TIA

Shorter sidewall = less flex
16" besides being cheaper, will in theory do better in the snow, since you'd most likely be running a narrower size. It will, however, affect potential future brake upgrades.. if you never plan on upgrading to larger brakes, then doesn't matter. :-)

A 16" setup will allow you to use the most narrow winter tires and give more sidewall protection against winter damanged roads. for the conditions you're describing, this seems to be the way to go.

Winter tire site
