Default how to measure wheel width

is wheel width measured from outside edge to outside edge, or across the inside of the rim lips (i.e. at the tire bead)? i'm planning to replace the stock 15" 8-spoke rims on my '96 A6. measuring the width through the spokes, it measures exactly 8" across (outer edge to outer edge), where i was assuming the stock rim was 7" wide. i can't measure the inside width because the tires are still mounted.

how is wheel width measured?

Default Width is measured where the tire bead seats. Your 15s should be 7" wide.
