Default How often should valve stems be replaced?

My current valve stems (metal ones) are about 2 years old. I'm getting ready to put on a second set of tires, and was wondering if the valve stems should be replaced at this time.

This one tire shop I went to said that since they're the metal kind, they don't need to be replaced.

I have a second set of valve stems available, but I am just wondering if I should put them in now or if it's perfectly fine to keep going on the existing ones.

Thanks!

Default IMHO I would keep the ones on there unless they are damaged or over six years on the car

rubber has a life span - just like the timing belts etc. I think six years would be it.

Default it's cheap and easy to replace them when mounting new tires....

but i have a set of bbs wheels that are 16 years old and still have the original metal bbs valve stems and innards and caps....still work just fine. i might replace them next time i put new tires on the car...in about 4 years. when i think about it, it's sort of amazing no one has taken the caps yet. there are cheap metal stems and good ones...use the good ones.
cheers

Why not just replace the inner core then? Just screws out. Can be done without removing tire.

Default yeah, the inner core/valve can be replaced at any point...

so I'm not worried about that. If it starts leaking, I can just swap it out at any time since the access to it is so easy.

Now the whole valve stem replacement requires that the tire be dismounted, so that's why I was wondering if it had to be replaced while I have the rims bare.
