I'm changing my tires once a year regardless of tire wear. After a year of driving my tires are about worn half way. The tires ability to resist hydroplaning is drastically reduced.
Another good indicator is the tires color. They lose alot of their oils. The tires are pretty dry after a year in the Florida sun.
I feel real confident driving in the pouring rain at 70 MPH ( Florida Limit) Without the fear of hydroplaning. They car feels solid.
I use RE71 Potenzas by Bridgestone. Great tire.

...tire shops probably laugh as they pull off my old tires every time. I don't go by time or mileage, but I usually use about 50-70% of them, I think. I'll usually take the wear indicator and double it. That's about my limit. If I lived somewhere other than Seattle, I might go longer, but with all the rain we get here, and all the ruts in the road that collect standing water, I'd rather not take the chance. Currently I'm running Pirelli P7000 Summers, but only have 5K miles on them. Even with full tread, I have to be careful of deep standing water.
Charles
