the AWD with All-seasons (provided they have tread left) will out accelerate the RWD car in the snow/ice. However, the RWD with snows will definetly STOP better, and turn better if not accelerating while turning.

Drove RWD with "snow grips" in winter service for 25-year before that. Also had a '95 Scoobie SVX with RE-95 Bridgestones OEM all seasons that were PHENOMENOL in snow up to a foot and now with this S4 of mine. Well, I gotta say a 2-wheeler with a locker rear AND snows isn't even close.

Car & Driver did excellent testing on this subject, but the article did not survive the migration to their new web site. I inquired and was told that the article would be put back online soon, but I still can't find it.
As I recall, the basic results (including testing with FWD and AWD A6's) were that AWD with all-season tires does much better than FWD or RWD with winter tires for climbing slippery hills, etc. But winter tires were much more effective than AWD for braking and handling.
This makes sense. When it is operative, AWD doubles available traction, whereas winter tires provide approximately 30% more traction than all-seasons. When braking, however, AWD is irrelevant, and it is a minor factor in handling compared to tires.
I love my Quattro with winter tires, but if forced to choose I would pick FWD+winter tires over AWD+all seasons.
Great article. Hope it reappears.

Blech, chains. I can't imagine anyone advocating them. They are tough on you and tough on your vehicle.
RWD and chains is far from unstoppable. Heck, AWD and chains is far from unstoppable. For that matter, ESP won't give you much on top of chains. Even a locking rear axle won't give you much on top of chains. Chains will pull you through a lot except glare ice and very deep snow. And ESP isn't going to help you in either of those cases.
