I need new tires in the 225/45/17 & 245/40/17 size. I am concerned more with ride comfort (as possible as that is with a 17" wheel) than all out performance.
What would be my best option, cost not an issue. I was looking between the Pilot Sport 2's , Pilot Sport A/S, and Goodyear f1 GS-D3. I guess the one with the softest sidewall would be the most comfortable?
Any advice or further suggestions?

Other "comfortable" performance tires that come to mind:
<a href="http://www.edgeracing.com/tire/674/">Falken ST115</a>
<a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR4&url=%2Ftires%2Ftires.jsp%3FtireMake%3D Dunlop%26tireModel%3DSP%2BSport%2B9000">Dunlop SP9000</a>
<a href="http://www.edgeracing.com/tire/629/">Toyo T1-S</a>
Out of those, I think the GSD3s perform the best, and offer good comfort... however all of those perform decently, all over good wet traction (GSD3 best though), and they're all comfortable and quiet.

I'd assume that the Michelin Pilot A/S has the best ride. Many of '04 A8L drivers highly recommend this tire for their 19" wheels, and these guys definitely care about ride quality.
I'm currently on the Michelin PS2, which is very firm; and I've never driven on the Goodyear F1 GS-D3.

Would you say that tireracks ratings should be taken with a grain of salt? From what I am reading from you, the pilot sport2 is very firm but it has a higher comfort rating than the pilot sport a/s?
I guess ride comfort is very subjective and that is why I am having a hard time gauging peoples impressions of what is a comfortable tire.

They lasted over 33k miles (could have gotten more with proper rotation) and seemed to have good wet weather performance.

Two Caveats,
1. Do take the results with a grain of salt when total reported mileage is well below average, like those for the PS2.
2. I don't think you can compare results at all between different categories, like the PS2 in max performance summer versus the PS A/S in ultra high performance all season. The owner expectations are just too different, and a "5" in all season "ride comfort" could feel like a "9" in the max performance summer category.

Although the Sport A/S will still have a softer ride, if you end up sticking to a summer performance tire instead of an A/S, you might want to consider the Conti Sport Contact 2...very smooth and quiet ride for a summer tire. The Dunlop 9000 is also a comfortable choice that has been popular as well.<ul><li><a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR8&url=/tires/index.jsp">Tires</a></li></ul>

If you're even considering the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, check out the Pirelli P-Zero Nero M&S. Super quiet and super smooth as well as top rated among A/S tires at Tire Rack. I'm running them on 20" rims on an '05 A8 SWB and love them. They handle as well as the non-A/S Michelin Pilot Sports I had on my previous car.
