Default Need help solving this equation. Any advice appreciated.

In the form of a school math question, here's the problem:

I have 3 sets of wheels for my A4:
-stock 15" (not 5 spokes, the other ugly ones) with yoko all-season tires
-15" steel wheels with blizzak winter tires
-18" BBS RX with pirelli P7000SS tires

here's what I need:
-set of wheels/tires for track, set of wheels for road use summer, set of wheels for use in winter.

here are the conditions/rules:
-I need winter wheels that will clear big brakes because I am getting the stoptech kit or similar (17" min?)
-you can sell one of these sets to buy another set of wheels

here's one solution, but I am trying to see if I there is a less expensive one:

-sell 15" steels+winter tires
-sell 15" stock+tires
-buy 18" OZ on sale at tirerack + track tires
-buy 17" S4 wheels + winter tires

Would anyone recommend using S4 wheels as track wheels? then I could use the same wheels for winter and track, just change the tires twice a year.

sorry for the long post! For reading all of this you get a cookie:

Default i wouldn't recommend putting the s4 wheels on your a4

the s4 rims are both expensive (~$400 each) and heavy (~28 lbs), though i'm not sure if you're thinking of buying them used or not. in any case, putting them on your a4 will likely lead to disappointment at the track.

instead, for less money, you could get a set of (used) ssr integrals for track use and really reduce your unsprung weight. however, i'm not sure if they clear the stoptechs.

just some guesses from someone who's never taken their car to the track ;-)

Default I agree about S4 wheels

they are quite heavy ~28 lb. and generally expensive. You can get any number of lighter wheels cheaper for track, and for track, used ones are probably just fine.

Also, you probably wouldn't want to use any larger than 17" for track wheels because of the weight. The reduced sidewall flex is minimal vs. the increase in unsprung and rotating weight. If using for track, be sure to find an 8" width to ensure the best contact patch.

Rehash, sell both 15" sets and buy 17"s for snow and track. Just one opinion.

Why not put SP5000s on as year round wheels. and use the S4 wheels for the track.

Default We get snow in montreal, as in 20 feet of it every winter...

I might be exagerating, but then again...

anyway, you get the idea need snow tires for sure.

Default ONE cookie?!?? One cookie buys you one answer...

yes! =)

I would recommend getting one set of S4 wheels for the winter, and another set of 17" rims for the track. Be careful though...not many 17" rims will clear big brakes. 18" rims for track use sound like they will be a bit on the heavy side.

Default I've heard such good things about the SP5K - but I understand - I was stationed in Plattsburg for 2

long winters. Worst I ever experienced. It is just about 60 miles south of you if I remember correctly.

Default Re: this equation.

There is no reason you couldnt use S4 wheels on the car. They arent the lightest out there, but they may not need to be, depending upon how fanatical you are about weight (remember they are good enough for the S4!). it depends upon how much you can get a set for, vs. buying some aftermarket wheels to use for the track also.

Shop & compare- call me if I can help with your order or to discuss further!
