I have to run 17s in the winter cause of my brakes. I have MM Spiders, 7.5" wide. Should I run 215s or try 205s for my snows?
Now, as to what tire: I live in Buffalo, NY, which usually means a few days where we get just pounded with snow, but most of the winter is slush/wet conditions, with some dry days. I want a tire with great snow/ice traction, but decent wet/dry traction too. What am I looking for? TIA anyone who takes the time to answer.

I see from your sig that it's an A4 sport, but what year and which one?
Some A4 sports seem to run 235/45/17 as stock size, while others run 225/45/17. Which are you running?

I would not fool around. Get some serious snow tires. I think you're being conservative when you say that there are a "few days" where you get pounded with snow. It is my experience (firsthand) that much of central/western NY gets snowfall of some type almost every week between December and February - especially the nasty lake effect squalls...
Anyway, I would consider the Hakk 2's. They are expensive - but you will not get stuck. I'd get them in 225/45-17s to improve dry handling. They come studded - so you will not need to worry about ice.
You can get them at the link...<ul><li><a href="http://www.meadowcreektire.com/">http://www.meadowcreektire.com/</a</li></ul>

I use 205/50x17 LM22 Blizzaks (TT) in Mass. and I think they're fantastic. They'll work on a 7.5" wheel (although 7" would be better in the snow.)

... and let me tell you - they were WONDERFUL!. Dry traction was only slightly below my summer tires (224.45.17 P6000's). Ice and snow traction, from what I could tell, were wonderful. Of course our east coast winter was pretty wussy, so I never got to try them out in deep Buffalo/Syracuse style drifts...
