Default Oregon Snow Tire Requirements

Following is a list of snow tires that have been approved by the Oregon DOT as meeting "traction tire" standards. This means that they are equivalent to studded tires in the eyes of the state police.
As of February 2, 1999 the list of tires of which ODOT is aware that meet the tests identified by the RMA are:
Michelin XM+S Alpin
Michelin Arctic Alpin
BFGoodrich Trailmaker Plus
BFGoodrich Winter Slalom
Uniroyal Rallye M&S
CTC Motomaster XGS
CTC Nordic Wintertrac
CTC Nordic Icetrac
Winter SRX
Sears Roadhandler Ice & Snow Winter Radial
Cooper Weather-Master S/T Steel Belted Radial M/S
Cooper Weather-Master XGR
Wintermaster Plus Steel Belted Radial M/S
Wintermaster XRT Studless
Power King Plus Steel Belted Radial M/S
Mastercraft Glacier Grip
Mastercraft Glacier Grip XT
Glacier Grip
Sears Winterhandler
Hercules Polar Trax Winter Radial
Hercules All-Trax Winter Radial
Akuret-Grip Plus
Dean Wintercat M+S
Autobacs Icegreft 02
Bridgestone Blizzak WS-15
Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-02
Firestone Winterfire
Dayton WidetrackWintertrax
Lots more interesting info at the link.
Steve

Snow Tire requirements

Default Oregon Snow Tire Requirements (more)

Noticed this (obviously incomplete) list once before, and here are a couple more interesting tidbits from the ODOT site.
BTW, I think anyone from ODOT would have approved of my Nokian Hak 1's after this weekend's adventures to Mt. Bachelor and Crater Lake. The park rangers were pretty amazed to see me come charging out of the powder-covered road they'd closed..more to follow..
"ODOT expects that other makes of tires will be identified as meeting the RMA definition of Tires Suitable for Use in Severe Snow Conditions. As ODOT is made aware of these tires, they will be added to the list of tires allowed as traction tires."
Exemptions: (from chain requirement when using tires not on "approved" list)
2.A four-wheel or all-wheel drive passenger vehicle if all of the following statements are true:
a) It has an unloaded weight of 6,500 pounds or less;
b) It is operated to provide power to both front and rear wheels;
c) It is carrying chains;
d) It has mud and snow, all-weather radial or traction tires on all of its wheels;
e) It is not towing another vehicle;
f) It is not being operated in a manner or under conditions that cause the vehicle to lose traction.
So, most of us Quattro drivers with snow tires would qualify..

Rich
'98 2.8Q sport, an amazing machine in the snow
Default So you were the guy I saw sideways coming down from Bachelor!?

No, not really. It was a quattro weekend here in Bend, though!
Steve Mac
98.5 1.8Tqms
Bend, OR
PS: This weekend, before the Santiam was closed it was chains req'd for ALL vehicles. Obviously they haven't driven a quattro!
