Default Planning on buying Blizzak MZ-01 205/55/16....

I live in San Jose, and will be traveling to Tahoe often. Does anyone have any comments on these tires or competing brands. I have searched the forum, but found little, except that these tires don't do that great on dry land. Thanks.

Also in SJ, and recommend Pirelli 210A's or Dunlop Winter Sp M2 (nt)

Default Pirelli 210As on dry road...

I've got a set of Pirelli 210A 16" on my S4. First trip of the season to Mammoth this past weekend. Very little snow on ground so not much to report in that arena. But the commute was 600 miles on dry road, averaged almost 80 mph with sections (short) up to 115 mph. The Pirellis felt just fine. Quiet, no noisier than stock RE040s. Slightly softer riding, due I'm sure to taller sidewalls. Slight decrease in turn-in response, but no particular problem.

So far, so good!

Default Much longer lasting compounds!

I used the ws 15 (utter garbage except on ice), and now use the new truck version (much better tire), they both wear really fast in the dry and they handle marginally. Strictly ice and snow ONLY. The ice/guardex compounds last much longer at high speeds and in the dry.

Default Blizzak MZ-01's ...also from San Jose

Since it's been so dry this winter, I haven't had much of a chance to use these tires in their true element. During my research on a good winter tire, most folks mentioned that the Blizzak's were great in the ice/snow but awful in dry winter highway use. But none of them tried the new MZ-01's. On my most recent trip to Tahoe, the tires were much quieter than my crappy P7000's and handled better than expected. Turn-in response was dulled a bit, but nothing too bad.

I'll post further impressions once the storms hit our area again, if ever.

Default Not often enough...

Actually, I haven't heard anything on the MZ-01's. But have talked to many owners and IMHO the 210A's and Dunlop Winter M2's...very good performance in snow and good in the dry. The reason I recommend these is because you're driving on dry roads over 90% of the time. And when you go up to Tahoe, snow doesn't start until about the 150-200 mile mark on 50 or 80...coming from SJ. So you're using most of the tread on dry roads, thus a good choice tire would be one that handles dry roads better.

If you went up every weekend for those 5 months, then the Blizzaks might be good, but then again at that point I would suggest maybe buying a house in Tahoe. =)
