spacers on 4.2?

Sorry, but I have no clue as to whether this is feasible or not. IMHO, my 4.2 needs to have the wheels/tires further out to fill the fender flares a bit. I just find the car looks funky from the rear as the 17" pie-plates seem to be too far inboard. I do not have a factory sport or modified ride ride height, just stock.
Is purely cosmetic a poor reason to attempt to use a spacer? What are the downsides to changing the track width, tire or wheel bearing wear?
Or is there a better way?
Thanks for any input on the subject.

Running spacers on stock wheels is very common. Aesthetics alone really is the biggest reason people use them. Second would be to clear big brake upgrades.
There aren't are downsides to using the spacers you're mentioning, 10-12mm and even 15mm spacers don't produce any verifiable excessive wear. The only downside might be the price, as spacers and lugs do add up.
Feel free to email with any questions, we stock all Audi/VW spacers and necessary bolts.

Works fine, even better I'd say. No adverse affect on handling, and no 'tramlining'.
Just get a top brand, and hubcentric.
I went for 20mm (DRA) rear and 15mm (DR) front. <a href="http://www.h-r.com/index.php?inhalt=produkt-d&sprache=en">H&R linky</a>
