Default Tire wear indicator?

I was just wondering if it is safe to drive the stock tires past the tread wear indicator if the car is only driven in a sunny climate that has no rain, snow?

Is it safe to drive a few thousand extra miles?
Not driving them till they are bald though...

Do you have state vehicle inspection where you drive?

Can you do it - yes
Is it wise - no

You can encounter water from many sources - not just weather.

Under "normal" driving conditions they shouldn't be too much of an issue. It is when you get in to an emergency situation that you will wish you had replaced them. If you have to take immediate evasive action there will not be time to replace your tires (the only part of your car that touches the ground). Maybe it’s the Boy Scout in me but I always keep my car prepared for the worst case scenario not the "normal".

I learned this lesson the hard way. Was stranded in the freeway on a christmas eve at 11p waiting for AAA to tow my car.

This ^ Spending the money for a full set of tires could save you money in the not so distant future depending how you drive and by chance of road hazards.
