Tire width vs. Wheel width...
What's the proper tire width for a 7.5" wheel? For a 8.5" wheel? I tried to get a feel from looking at packages in the Tire Rack, but it seemed to me that it varied a lot. For example, I see 17x7.5 packages with 205's, 215's,and 225's? I also see 17x8 packagesx with 225's, 235's, and 245's. Please include any limitations of a set up on the a4. Thanks...
Stephen

Re: Tire width vs. Wheel width...
From what I can tell, Tire Rack is using the recommended size for a particular wheel,
and then going up/down one size also. This is perfectly normal.
For example, from what I can tell, the recommended size for a 7.5" is a 215, but you
can jump up to a 225 or down to a 205, no big deal.
Also, a 205 tire only refers to a 205mm section width - this should NOT be equal to
the rim width when converted to inches. If you are really curious, I can look up the
exact recommendations and reply...
Mark Collett

My friend, a mechanical engineer for honda who specifically works on tires and suspensions...
He looked it up a while ago and said the optimal size tire for a 17x8.5 rim is 225/45. Optimal for what I don't know but he said it was based on a couple of factors. From personal experience it is not optimal for curbs and potholes as the rims get scratched very easily.
What is the correlation between tire width (205,215,225, etc) and wheel width (7.0, 7.5, 8.0, etc)..
