I'm thinking that if I upgrade to 17's for my 1.8T, I may end up spending some pretty good money. Down the road, I can see myself picking up an S4 (00 or 01) to replace the 1.8. In that event, I think I'll need to narrow my selection of rims to what fits the S4. Am I correct in assuming that whatever fits the S4 will fit the A4 as well (correct offset)?

Don't know about your assumption, but R-28s fit both...and look good with both, IMHO. Actually, very few people running R-28s on S4 for some reason! Maybe viewed as "too heavy" (?), but good price, very durable and styling really suits the car.

If I'm going to even think about wheels like those, they better fit both cars. I don't want to go to 18's though, so my choices are somewhat limited.
I love the Kinesis K58's (I think I saw a pic on Sharon's Imola S4...mmmmmmmmmm), but they are 18's only! :-(
