Default What are good snow tires for Chicago winters?

Hello,
I have a 2000 A6 Bi-Turbo and I want to buy some good winter tires for the next winter season. The reason? Well, this winter I've been driving on Bridgestone Potenza's and they are bad in snow. I need better tires for next year's winter. I heard about the Bridgestone's Blizzaks but supposetly they are not great in big snow.

Can someone help me out?
Help appreciated sincerely.
Thank you,
David

Default Dunlop 3Ds - I have read that Blizzacks soft compound only goes to half the tread depth

They are great on the RS

I've run the M3s on the A4 and loved them but running Conti Contacts allseasons on the A4 full time now as my daughter uses it at IU and no way to swap rims there.

Running 3Ds on Benz; Yoko W.Drive on allroad. Both do well.

+1 on the Dunlop 3Ds. They're awesome on both our cars.

Both the Dunlop Winter sport 3D and the Bridgestone Blizzak LM25 would make great choices.<ul><li><a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR8&amp;url=/winter/index.jsp">winter</a></li></ul>

Default Are you looking for winter only tires or an All-Season tire that's good in snow?

If you are going to have dedicated snow tires for the winter and other tires for the rest of the year either of Gary's suggestions will perform great in snow.

If you want a tire you can run all year and still be good in snow I can highly recommend ContiExtremeContact. I use them on my S6 as winter tires and switch to summer tires as soon as the snow is gone and temps are above 40 F. With quattro these tires are very good in the snow. Not as good as snow tires, but the best of any ultra high performance all-season tire in snow. Also, the dry and wet performance is still very good, better than any snow tire that I've seen.

I live in SE MI near Detroit. We get occasional big snow storms, but most of the winter the roads are dry or just wet. These are the conditions that snow tires don't perform as well as ultra high performance all-seasons. You can get performance snow tires, but they are expensive. I decided to go with the relatively cheap ContiExtremeContact for the very good dry/wet traction and decent snow traction this winter and have never regretted it.

Default I'm looking for winter tires, not all seasons. I have BS's Potenza All-Seasons.

I will look into the Dunlop 3D's more.

Thanks guys.
