What is meant by wheel offset?

Take a look at old rear drive cars vs. newer cars. On old cars you'll notice that the rims stick out more compared to the center of the wheel. This is a positive offset. Newer cars have a negative offset where the hub sticks out further and the rim is dished in more. Newer 911's vs. older ones are good example.
Almost all cars are negative offset these days because it makes for less twitchy handling, especially on FWD cars.
If the offset on a wheel is wrong you'll screw up the handling to a degree and also have problems with tire rub.
