For snows, naturally.

And will the rims clear the brake rotors?

Yes, it's OT for an Audi forum. :-)

TIA.

Default I have an '05 LGT, and have done this exercise...

16" wheels won't fit over stock front brakes. I just bought WRX front brakes and wheels as a retrofit to allow for 205/55/16 snows. 16" snows are slightly narrower than stock, are available in a much wider variety of choices, and are much cheaper vs. 17". E-mail me if you want a post mortem after I tackle the retrofit...

The only 17" alternative to the stock 215/45/17 size is a 205/50/17, which is marginally narrower than the stock 215/45/17's, has an even larger rolling circumference than the common 1/2" width upgrade 225/45/17's, and is an uncommon and usually pricey size.

Note that tire width varies somewhat within same-size versions of different models, even within one manufacturer's full line. Also note the rim width used to measure the diameter; the wider the rim width the smaller the tire diameter and vice versa. FYI, the stock RE92A has a 24.6" overall tire diameter.

Speedometer Calculator (Compare different tire diameters)

Default Thanks for the info. Sounds as if I'll go with stock-sized snows.

Hmmm, how about a plus one for the street tires? Worth it, or not worth the bother?

Default OEM 215/45R17 = 2005/2006 LGT...

...both of which require 17" wheels to clear 12.3" front brakes. Prior to 2005 the largest OEM size was 205/55R16.

Default We have not found any 16" wheels that clear the brakes.

bigger brakes than the normal 2.5i

If you find a 16" wheel that fits, use 205/55R16
