Default Wheel offset and width questions

I'm hoping to get some clarification before I invest in some new wheels. I currently have the OEM 18" 7 spoke wheels, which as far as I can tell have a width of 8 inches, and an offset of 48 mm. All have some damage/curb rash. When shopping for replacement 18 inchers, do I need to match or stay close to the 48 offset? What would happen (or what else would I need) if the wheels I like have an offset of 30 or 35? Finally, will my current tires, which are new, fit a new wheel that is 8.5 inches wide? Thanks in advance!

Default if you choose 8.5 et 38 at the lowest offset

will push the wheel out almost flush. with the stock 245 40 18 tire you'll be fine

Thanks Mizarc. So if I find wheels that are 8" wide, I should stay at or very close to the 48 offset, correct? I know you can go from a lower offset to a higher one with spacers, but you really can't go in the other direction without changing the width, right?

On the 05 A6 you can go out to an 8.0" wide wheel with a 32 mm offset, or an 8.5" with a 38mm offset. The important thing to remember is the lower # places the face further from the hub, you can push a wheel out with spacers (ET48 minus a 15mm spacer=ET33)

Achtuning carries Hartmann wheels which are pretty nice, they have fitment info in the wheel descriptions if you need it as well
